Commuter or regional bus service can be very similar to local bus service, but is designed to carry people over longer distances across a region where rail options are unavailable. Often, a fixed railway route would be a better option or a long-term goal, but in some situations, a couple of buses over regular roads may do. These buses generally make few stops and connect business districts and transit centers, but may also make local stops in ridership "sheds."
In the Chicagoland area, Pace operates some commuter buses for long-distance express routes.
Commuter bus service can be provided with any type of bus, although some of the long-distance routes may use nicer coaches more like shuttle buses with cushioned seats and added amenities, such as reading lamps, TV, computer connections, and more.
